This is the inside of my model of the USS Oregon. It's built from the Glencoe plastic kit which is 19 inches long and has a maximum width of 4 inches. The model is about ten years old now (Jan/99). When first built it used a Tamtech unit. However, about 3 years ago the Oregon was sunk in shallow water, the result of a collison with a larger boat. The Tamtech unit shorted out and never could be made to work again.
In it's present configuration the Oregon carries 6 sub-C NI-CAD cells and two Mabuchi RF-500T-12580 motors which turn two 3/4" scratch-built brass props. Not much speed, but she can cruise for 8 hours on a single charge! The Mabuchi motors, which are tape recorder-type motors are original equipment and have been running reliably for 10 years.
For electronics I am using a 2 channel Hitec micro-receiver, a Futaba mini servo and the Tiny Smartcontrol, which also activates the searchlights. As you can see, it's not even crowded inside.
